Burn Center Overview

The Burn Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) follows the established guidelines of the American Burn Association (ABA) and practices in a multi-disciplinary team and patient/family-centered approach. As an adult and pediatric verified ABA Burn Center since 2011, we offer the highest quality of care for all burn patients. The Burn Center is proud to serve the Bay Area in excellence in prevention, treatment, and aftercare for burn injuries. Our center is the only combined ABA verified Burn Center and American College of Surgeons Level 1 Trauma Center for the entire Bay Area. As part of the Santa Clara Valley Healthcare, we provide comprehensive burn care to the residents of Santa Clara County. In addition, we treat patients from Alameda, Contra Costa, Monterey, San Benito, Santa Cruz, San Mateo, and San Francisco Counties. Our team works closely with emergency medical services leadership from all Bay Area counties to coordinate expeditious Burn Care and triage for patients involved in traumatic burn injuries. We are also part of the Western States Burn Disaster Consortium which coordinates the triage of mass causality incidents regarding burn injuries for the Western U.S.
Our Burn Center has been open since 1970 and is one of the longest running centers in the nation. We have been continuously verified by ABA in the treatment of children and adults since 2011. As of 2025, there are less than 45 centers in the entire country that have this distinction. We provide comprehensive, compassionate, and respectful patient centered care for all patients. We strive to achieve the best possible functional and aesthetic outcome for all our patients to return to productive and meaningful lives. The Burn Center provides care in all phases including acute/critical care, acute surgical care, and reconstructive/scar procedural care (including surgery and laser therapy). Our team includes physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, registered dietitians, social workers, child-life specialists, and case managers. All providers receive specialized education in Burn Care and meet requirements for ongoing continual education requirements in Burn Care.
Our Burn Center is fortunate to sit on the same campus as the #1 rated US News and World Report Rehabilitation Center on the West Coast. In addition, our Burn Center is part of the Stanford Plastic Surgery and General Surgery Residencies and provides training to future generations in delivering excellence in Burn Care.
On behalf of the entire team, we welcome you to our Burn Center.
Sincerely,

Emiko Rivera,
