Jennifer Schymick, MD PhD

Clinical Focus
Clinical Genetics. Dr. Schymick is particularly interested in the intersection of advances in genomic medicine and its impact on human health and disease. Dr. Schymick has been the director of the Medical Genetics clinic since joining Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in 2020 and is also a member of the Perinatal Diagnostic Center. Dr. Schymick sees both adult and pediatric patients.
Academic Background
Dr. Schymick received her Bachelors of Science in Biology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2002. She received her PhD in Clinical Genetics from Oxford University in 2009 and her medical degree from the University of California, Irvine as part of the Medial Science Training Program funded by the National Institutes of Health in 2013. She completed Internal Medicine residency at the University of Toronto in 2018 and a fellowship in Medical Genetics and Genomics at Stanford University in 2020.

Astrid Torres Zapata MS, LGC
A genetic counselor in Prenatal and Medical Genetics. She earned her bachelor's degree in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Nuevo Leon, Faculty of Medicine, in 2017. She completed her clinical clerkship at Hospital Universitario Jose Eleuterio Gonzalez, gaining experience in internal medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and other specialties. Astrid obtained her master’s degree in genetic counseling from Stanford University in 2023. She joined Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in October 2023 and is involved in both the Medical Genetics clinic and the prenatal genetic counseling service.
Paige Calvert, MGCS, LCGC
A genetic counselor in Medical Genetics. She received her undergraduate degree from Santa Clara University in 2018 and her master’s degree in genetic counseling from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2021. She was a LEND fellow at UW-Madison, where she completed coursework and research in neurodevelopmental disabilities. She joined Valley Medical Center in August 2021 and participates in the Medical Genetics clinic as well as the prenatal genetic counseling service.
Michael Van Andel, MS, LGC
A genetic counselor in Medical Genetics. He received his undergraduate degree from Michigan State in 2007 and his master’s degree in genetic counseling from Long Island University in 2022. He joined Valley Medical Center in October 2022 and participates in the Medical Genetics clinic as well as the prenatal genetic counseling service.
