Helping Those in Need - SCVMC and Cancer CAREpoint provide wigs and support to cancer patients

Tweet Share Santa Clara County, CA – Walk into the conference room at Valley Specialty Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and you’ll be greeted by a number of well-coiffed mannequin heads.
This is where Cancer CAREpoint and Sobrato Cancer Center staff and volunteers will be helping patients who are losing their hair to cancer. They will be running a Wig Bank at the Center to make it easy for patients to get wigs, hats or scarves.
For some patients, hair loss is one of the most significant side-effects of treatment. Hair loss can lead to anxiety and depression and may impact a person’s sense of self and identity. While hair loss is usually a temporary situation for cancer patients it can still have profound psychosocial implications.
While cancer patients understand on an intellectual level that they will lose their hair, at the Wig Bank patients often have an emotional reaction to losing their hair and getting a wig.
Wigs are provided at no-cost to patients. This year the Cancer CAREpoint Wig Bank received a $50,000 contribution from the County of Santa Clara to partner with Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. The funding helps to provide wigs, which can be an extraordinary expense for many cancer patients, as well as offer support from social workers. The retail value of a Wig Bank wig is about $300, and many insurance companies only cover part of the cost.
The goal the program is to increase access to wigs for low-income cancer patients by providing on-site services. And at the same time, create a safe, welcoming environment within a medical setting. These are the hallmarks of Cancer CAREpoint’s services and the Sobrato Cancer Center.
