PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration Residency
Our PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency Program welcomed its first resident in 2015 and received full accreditation with the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) in 2017.
The PGY2 HSPAL residency program director is Kelsey Kaku, PharmD, BCPS, MBA. The residency program coordinator is Michelle Ito, PharmD, BCACP.
For 2024-25, the program is recruiting one PGY2 Health-System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership (HSPAL) resident.
PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration and leadership Residency
Our PGY2 HSPAL residency is a one-year postgraduate specialty training program that offers residents an immersive experience in pharmacy management after they have completed a PGY1 residency.
The goals of the program are to provide pharmacist clinicians the opportunity to focus on becoming pharmacist managers for a clinical or operational management role in a variety of work settings, including mid to large-sized hospitals, outpatient pharmacies, and health systems. As a pharmacy department that offers comprehensive health services for the community, we offer PGY2 administration residents experience in diverse management settings: inpatient hospital, outpatient, ambulatory care, public health, pharmacy purchasing, and managed care.
During the 12-month program, PGY2 administration residents will complete training in pharmacy operations and rotate through experiences (see below) with our Director of Pharmacy and Assistant Directors of Pharmacy. Examples of activities include completing quality improvement initiatives to improve pharmacy services and maintaining regulatory standards set forth by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Board of Pharmacy (BOP), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Joint Commission. The resident will also complete a year-long administration-related residency project with the intent of presenting the research results at a conference.
At the completion of the PGY2 HSPAL Residency, the resident will be fully prepared to serve as a pharmacy manager in diverse patient care settings.

Each resident will be required to design and write a research proposal. If Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval is required, the resident will present to the IRB committee. The primary focus of the research project will be administration-related, such as a quality improvement project or cost savings analysis. The Residency Program Coordinator, primary preceptor, and members of the Resident Research Subcommittee will guide the resident throughout the year with the intent of presenting the research results at the Western States Regional Residency Conference in San Diego, California. In addition to acquiring time management and presentation skills, the resident will improve his/her writing skills through completion of the research project.
Our institution is affiliated with a variety of pharmacy schools, including University of the Pacific School of Pharmacy and Touro University California College of Pharmacy. Dozens of pharmacy students per academic year complete their clinical clerkship rotations (APPEs) within our institution, thus providing the resident many opportunities to precept pharmacy students.
We have an expanding PGY1 program. PGY2 administration residents will assist pharmacy supervisors and directors in precepting students and PGY1 residents during their administration rotations. Additionally, our institution is a certified provider of continuing education for pharmacists; the PGY2 resident will be asked to present a continuing education program during the year.
Pharmacy residents will complete a teaching certificate program that is run jointly by our Health System and the University of the Pacific. This is optional for PGY2 residents who already have a teaching certificate from their PGY1 program.
The PGY2 resident will act as the Pharmacy Quality Committee chair for the duration of the residency year. During this experience, the resident will lead the pharmacy leadership team in quality improvement projects. Past projects include improving wait time in our outpatient pharmacies and preparing to move into a new inpatient bed building.
Regional and National Conferences
In November, residents may attend the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Seminar, an annual four-day meeting where residents showcase their institution’s residency program to prospective applicants and have an opportunity to attend continuing education programs and develop networking connections.
In December, the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Annual Midyear Clinical Meeting provides similar benefits to that of the CSHP meeting, except on a broader scale, as this is a national conference.
In May, residents may present the outcomes of their longitudinal research project at the Western States Residency Conference, a gathering of residents and fellows from across the nation.
Conference attendance is optional, but encouraged. The residency program reimburses residents for at least 50% of registration costs, but the program is unable to reimburse residents for airfare (mileage reimbursement for driving is available). Hotel reimbursement is oftentimes granted, but this is not guaranteed like registration costs.
Qualifications for Acceptance
All applicants must fulfill the following criteria in order to qualify for acceptance into our PGY2 HSPAL Residency Program:
- Graduation from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program or one in the ASHP accreditation process (e.g. – Candidate Status)
- Eligible for licensure in the state of California
- Demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States
- Favorable recommendation letters from clinical facility and/or former employers
- Demonstrate collegiality, clinical knowledge, interest in research, and motivation necessary for successful completion of residency training
- Demonstrate desire to pursue a career in pharmacy management
- Completion of an interview with residency program coordinator, residency program director, director of pharmacy services, and preceptors

- A sample presentation to be presented at the on-site interview.
- A sample of your written work (e.g. publication, monograph, drug utilization review, etc).
