Our services

Our pediatric services combine state-of-the-art clinical practices with attention to the physical and emotional needs of children and their families. Our pediatricians work closely with other medical professionals involved in the child's care and can provide both routine visits, as well as treatment for complex medical and surgical cases.


PEDIATRIC INPATIENT CARE

PEDIATRIC INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (PICU)

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a 12 bed unit that cares for critically ill or injured children admitted from communities throughout the Bay Area.  The PICU care team includes pediatric critical care specialists, pediatric and surgical specialists, as well as dedicated pharmacists, therapists, pediatric critical care nurses, social workers, dieticians, and case managers. Together, the team members provide family-centered care to all PICU patients.  

PEDIATRIC SHORT STAY AND PROCEDURAL SEDATION UNIT

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center provides sedation to children as needed to reduce fear, anxiety, and pain that children may experience during procedures, such as MRI, CT scan, EEG, upper and lower endoscopy, dental work, bronchoscopy, hearing tests, and kidney and liver biopsies.  The pediatric sedation service at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a Silver Institutional Member of the Society for Pediatric Sedation (SPS), an international leader in the advancement of pediatric sedation.  The unit also provides short-stay services to children needing transfusions, medication infusions, and other care that does not require an overnight hospital stay.

PEDIATRIC WARD

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a 33 bed unit providing care to children hospitalized with acute conditions and exacerbations of chronic conditions.  Led by pediatric hospitalists who specialize in the care of hospitalized children, the team includes specialty pediatric and surgical consultants, pediatric nurses, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, dieticians, case managers, and child life specialists to provide family-centered care to all patients.  The hospitalists maintain close contact with the patient's primary care providers so that follow-up care is well coordinated. 

PEDIATRIC REHABILITATION

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is the only dedicated inpatient pediatric rehabilitation unit in the Peninsula and South Bay and takes referrals from the entire Bay Area.  The rehabilitation program treats children with conditions affecting their function, independence and cognition. Children in this program receive a minimum of three hours of comprehensive rehabilitation therapy per day, six days a week, with an overall goal of maximizing each child's abilities and minimize the effects of their impairments. The care team includes physicians specializing in rehabilitation medicine, as well as pediatricians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, social workers, psychologists, nutritionists, and case managers.


NEWBORN CARE

NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT (NICU)

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center is a 40-bed start-of-the-art facility, accredited as a regional center by California Children's Services program of the California Department of Health Services, to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary, family-centered care to premature and critically ill newborns.  Prior to delivery, specialized obstetricians and neonatologists provide prenatal diagnosis and counseling to parents with high-risk pregnancies and delivery situations.  The Delivery Room Resuscitation Team is available at all times to attend deliveries and manage sick and premature newborns.  Special programs in therapeutic hypothermia for infants deprived of oxygen and breast feeding for premature infants.  Tours available.  (408) 885-6428.​

MOTHER-INFANT-CARE-CENTER (MICC)

Santa Clara Valley Medical Center provides private birthing rooms for newborn deliveries.  Healthy newborns then bond with their mothers and "room-in" immediately after birth.  Special programs in lactation/breastfeeding support. Tours available. (408) 885-7925.​


PEDIATRIC OUTPATIENT CARE

PEDIATRIC URGENT CARE

Available weekdays, evenings, weekends, and holidays (except for Christmas and Thanksgiving Days) at two dedicated locations. Provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment for ill and injured infants, children, and adolescents who do not require emergency room services. ADOLESCENT MEDICINE

CHILD Advocacy and protection

The Children's Advocacy Center of Santa Clara County, located adjacent to O'Connor Hospital, provides comprehensive evaluations and advocacy services for children and youth who may have experienced child physical abuse, sexual abuse and assault, emotional abuse, and neglect. The Children's Advocacy Center is a multidisciplinary partnership between SCVMC Pediatrics, law enforcement, Social Services (child protective services), the District Attorney's Office, victim advocates, and mental health professionals.

Child Psychiatry

Evaluation and management of pediatric patients with mental health conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, anxiety, depression, eating disorder, mood disorder, post-traumatic disorders, and behavioral problems related to developmental disorders.  Appointments by referral only; psychiatric services at VHC Bascom and VHC Downtown only available for patients who receive primary care pediatric services at a VHC site. Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics

Comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation and ongoing management of children and adolescents with suspected attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, behavior problems, developmental delays, intellectual disability, and learning problems. The Gender Health Center (GHC) cares for transgender, gender-non-binary, and gender expansive people of all ages in the South Bay. Justice Involved Youth

Comprehensive medical services for youth and young adults within the Juvenile Justice system (Juvenile Hall, Juvenile Ranch).

Neurosurgery

Ophthalmology

The Pediatric Ophthalmology clinic strives to make each visit as fun as possible to elicit each child's participation in the care of their eyes. We employ toys, magic lights and a no- white- coat policy to promote that goal. The clinic has vast experience treating common eye conditions of childhood such as amblyopia, or "lazy eyes", and strabismus or misalignment of the eyes. We also have extensive experience in treating less common conditions such as infectious and non-infectious inflammation of the eyes, congenital malformations of the eyes, oculoplastic abnormalities, cataracts, glaucoma, tumors of the eye and surrounding structures of the eyes and many other conditions of the eyes. We provide 24/7 emergency care as well. We utilize all ophthalmology specialists and advanced technology to provide the best care possible for each child. Appointments are by referral only.

Orthopedics

Evaluation and management of pediatric patients with conditions such as bone and joint trauma and infection, sports injuries, congenital skeletal problems, hip disorders, scoliosis, and tumors. Pediatric Cardiology (Heart Disease)

Diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired heart disease in the fetus, infants, children, and adolescents, including electrocardiogram, echocardiography, prenatal diagnosis, arrhythmias, heart failure, and post heart surgery care. Pediatric Endocrinology (Hormonal Disease)

Diagnosis and treatment of childhood diabetes, management of insulin pumps and care for infants, children, and adolescents with growth problems, delayed or early puberty, thyroid disease, and other hormone conditions. Pediatric Gastroenterology (Digestive disease)

Comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and management of all gastrointestinal and liver disorders, and the nutritional problems of infants, children, and teens. Examples of conditions treated include inflammatory bowel disease, chronic abdominal pain, hepatitis, cholestatic jaundice, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, pancreatitis, chronic constipation, diarrhea, gastroesophageal reflux, motility disorders, and impedance study, endoscopy, colonoscopy, liver biopsy, and caregiver training and support for patients requiring tube feedings for enteral nutrition. Pediatric Healthy Lifestyle Center (PHLC)

Multidisciplinary care of children 12 months to 18 years old that focuses on lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes and to improve other health conditions, including high cholesterol and triglycerides , steatohepatitis, high blood pressure, and insulin resistance. PHLC team members include pediatricians, registered dieticians, and social workers. Appointments by referral. Patients may call (408) 957-8601.

Pediatric Neurology

Outpatient/Inpatient consultation and ongoing management of infants, children , and teens with seizures, cerebral palsy, headaches, neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and tics, and other disorders of the brain and nervous system. Pediatric Nephrology

Management of kidney conditions in children 0-21 years of age including acute and chronic renal failure, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome, renal stone disorders, electrolyte and mineral disorders, hypertension, urinary tract infections, neonatal kidney conditions, and congenital abnormalities of the genitourinary system. Procedures include kidney biopsies and infusion therapies. Antenatal visits may be scheduled for evaluation of abnormal renal imaging. Appointments by referral. (408) 885-5940

Pediatric Pulmonary (Pediatric Lung Diseases and Respiratory Care services)

Outpatient and inpatient management of children Oto 18 yrs (and up to 21 years if the child has CCS insurance) with pulmonary diseases such as Asthma, Chronic Cough, Chronic Lung Disease, Prematurity-related Lung Disease, Interstitial Lung Disease, Congenital Lung Malformation, Neuromuscular disorders with pulmonary involvement, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Hypoventilation Syndromes, Ventilator Dependence, CPAP or BIPAP Use, Tracheostomy Care, noisy breathing, congenital stridor, or exercise intolerance. Services offered include flexible bronchoscopic evaluation of the airways, nasal ciliary biopsy, and full pulmonary function test. Rehabilitation and Spina Bifida

Outpatient follow up of pediatric patients receiving acute inpatient rehabilitation at VMC, as well as comprehensive services to children with permanent and temporary disabilities resulting from chronic conditions, illnesses, or injuries.
