Backpack Homeless Healthcare Program
The Backpack Homeless Healthcare Program (BHHP) is an internationally-recognized street medicine program. Their mission is to meet and serve people “where they are.”
BHHP uses the street medicine model to reach the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Santa Clara County. While carrying backpacks filled with medicines and medical equipment, the team provides health care services wherever people might be, such as in the streets, homeless encampments, freeways or railroad tracks.
The BHHP team consists of a medical provider, nurse, and community health outreach specialist. The team offers many different medical and social support services, such as flu shots, primary care services like diabetes treatment, and help with finding shelter.
